Unix
Accessing UBUnix from a non-UB location
Connecting to UBUnix
UBUnix only accepts connections from non-UB (remote) locations by affiliated UB faculty, staff and students that are made using secure protocols.
Non-UB Locations
If the IP address of your remote computer does not start with "128.205." then you are considered a non-UB location.
- If you are connecting from an affiliated Buffalo Hospital, you are considered to be at a UB location.
- If you log into UBVPN with your UBITName and password before requesting a connection to UBUnix, your IP address will be an on-campus address.
Secure protocols
Applications that use secure protocols include ssh from a terminal on a Macintosh or on a Unix system. From a Windows computer, PuTTY is the recommended tool.
Transferring files to UBUnix
Affiliated faculty, staff and students can transfer files to UBUnix in 2 ways.
Recommended secure file transfer
Use one of the following secure applications:
- sftp from a Unix operating system,
- FileZilla configured for sftp from a Windows computer , or
- Fetch configured for sftp from a Macintosh
Registering a remote IP address to use (insecure) ftp
Use a browser to visit remote.buffalo.edu and complete an IP address registration using your UBITName and the IP address of your remote computer.
Many ISPs give you a new IP address each time you connect. This would require you to visit remote.buffalo.edu every time you connect to the internet and wish to access UBUnix. However, very often the IP addresses you are given from your ISP will have the same first two "octets". For example:
First Time I Connect: 192.168.14.88
Second Time I Connect: 192.168.56.23
Third Time I Connect: 192.168.56.71
Notice that each time I connected to this particular ISP, my IP address started with "192.168.".
To access UBUnix from any IP address that starts with "192.168." leave the first two parts of your IP address on remote.buffalo.edu as they are and make the last two parts of your IP address blank.
