Accessing UBUnix from a your off-campus ISP

UBUnix is set up to DENY access if you attempt to connect from a third-party ISP (that is, the IP address requesting the connection does not start with "128.205." and your hostname does not end in ".buffalo.edu").

NOTE: If you are connecting from an affiliated Buffalo Hospital, you are considered to be on-campus.

You first must register your IP address at http://remote.buffalo.edu (you can also telnet to remote.buffalo.edu if you do not have access to a browser). You will need your UBITName for verification.

If you only need access to UBUnix using your current connection for up to one week, simply enter your UBITName where specified and press GO.

Access for more than a week

If you have a static IP (your IP address does not change), you can change this to the amount of weeks that you would like UBUnix to "remember" you (for up to 12). After this time period expires, you will need to visit remote.buffalo.edu again.

The second option allows you to specify an IP address other than the one you are currently using.

Many ISPs give you a new IP address each time you connect. This would require you to visit remote.buffalo.edu every time you connect to the internet and wish to access UBUnix. However, very often the IP addresses you are given from your ISP will have the same first two "octets". For example:

First Time I Connect: 192.168.14.88
Second Time I Connect: 192.168.56.23
Third Time I Connect: 192.168.56.71

Notice that each time I connected to this particular ISP, my IP address started with "192.168.".

CIT's remote.buffalo.edu service has a way for you to tell it to allow you access from any IP address that starts with "192.168.". To do this, you simply leave the first two parts of your IP address on remote.buffalo.edu as they are, and remove the last two parts of your IP address - leaving them blank.

This way, you can go to remote.buffalo.edu and tell it to give you permission to telnet, rlogin, FTP, and ssh into UBUnix from your ISP for up to 12 weeks, despite the fact that the last two parts of your IP address change each time you connect.

NOTE: If you are unable to telnet to ubunix.buffalo.edu after requesting access from the remote.buffalo.edu web page, please try requesting access by telnet remote.buffalo.edu. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as America Online (AOL) and Adelphia Powerlink sometimes use a proxy server for web browsing, which prevents the web page from determining the actual host address you are connecting from. If you telnet to remote.buffalo.edu, you bypass this proxy server, and we can determine your actual IP address.
