UBUnix
UBUnix is an operating system using RedHat Enterprise Server Linux with academic software installed that you can connect to from a personal computing device.
Important:
UBUnix is a legacy Linux based time-sharing environment similar to computing services offered before the popularity of personal computers and graphic user interfaces.
UBUnix must be accessed through the Internet using terminal emulation programs such as PuTTY, ssh and sshfs; File Transfer Protocol programs such as SFTP, Fetch and FileZilla; and remote windowing software such as X-Win32 and X11.
UBUnix does not have a Graphic User Interface and requires familiarity with Linux commands through a command-line interface. Unless you have a specific and compelling reason to use UBUnix, we strongly suggest using popular personal computing alternatives with easy-to-use interfaces.
This site is primarily for people who are already knowledgeable with Linux and UNIX based time-sharing environments to document locally developed and configured UBUnix solutions and options.
Spring 2012 UBUnix Changes
The operating system for UBUnix was changed from Solaris to RedHat Enterprise Server Linux. Some software on UBUnix was updated with similar software that should offer the same functionality. Pine and Acroread are no longer availalble.
Getting Started
Managing
- Accessing Your Files and Use UBUnix Commands
UBUnix home directories are stored in UBFS Myfiles directories in the ubunix subdirectory - See Available Software
View software available on UBUnix - Setting UBUnix File Permissions
Configure your files for sharing - Managing Inheritance of Permissions
Control whether permissions applied to any folder are made to all subfolders or files - Restoring Files You Deleted:
- Self-restoring files from Myfiles (backed up every 6 hours)
- Submit a request form to have a deleted file restored which was on the system before morning backups were done
- Printing Files
Send a file to a site to be printed. Jobs must be released from a Print Release Station - Export Your Pine Address Book
If you previously used Pine to read email on UBUnix, export your Pine addressbook and set up another email client (there are no longer any email clients on UBUnix)
