Access UBfs

Web Folders on Windows XP

WebDAV allows you to drag-and-drop files to and from your computer and a web server, such as ubfs.buffalo.edu (UBfs). Web Folders is the Microsoft Windows implementation of WebDAV.

Mapping a drive directly to UBfs is the preferred access method, but Web Folders is an alternate access method when drive mapping is not available, for example in ResNet.

Web Folders uses Windows Explorer. Do not confuse Windows Explorer with Internet Explorer!

Requirements

Your computer must be running Windows XP. Authentication to UBfs is done with your UBITName and password or a departmental AD account (ITorg account) and password.

Creating a web folder

Create a web folder that links you to the top of the UBfs filesystem:

  1. Double click on the My Network Places icon on your desktop.
  2. Click on Add Network Place from the Network Tasks menu on the left side of the window.
  3. The Add a Network Place wizard will open. Click Next.
  4. Select Choose another Network Location. Click Next.
  5. In the Internet or Network Address field enter https://ubfs.buffalo.edu/ and click Next.
  6. Enter your UBITName and password when prompted. (You may be asked multiple times to enter your identity throughout the process.)
  7. Enter a meaningful name for this link to your folder, such as ubfs. Click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. A Windows Explorer window will open to the topmost area in UBfs. Click on links to navigate to your destination.

Connect to other UBfs directories

A web folder can also link to any particular directory; multiple folders can be created.

To link to Myfiles, create a web folder for:

https://ubfs.buffalo.edu/ubfs/myfiles/j/d/jdoe
where j is the first letter of your UBITName, d is the second letter of your UBITName, and your UBITName is jdoe.

To link to Collaboration (collab) space, create a web folder for:

https://ubfs.buffalo.edu/ubfs/collab

UBfs file transactions

It's recommended that you do not include spaces in file names to avoid having spaces converted to the space designation: %20 .

Add, delete and edit files on UBfs using your Web Folders. You can also save files from applications. Choose File --> Save and choose My Network Places, then the name of your Web Folder.

Manage permissions of files on UBfs

File permissions cannot be modified through Web Folders. Browse to https://ubfs.buffalo.edu and login with your UBITName and password to modify permissions of files and directories.
