Software Recommendations
What should your computer be able to run?
- Microsoft Office (Win Mac) or OpenOffice (Win Mac)
- an Internet browser
- Symantec AntiVirus (Win Mac) software (not required for UBLinux)
- Two or more applications at the same time
Some academic departments have specific technology requirements: be sure to check with your department before setting up or purchasing your computer. If you need help in assessing your needs, contact your academic department or UBMicro.
Be safe: install these first
Install these programs to help protect your computer from viruses, malware, and hackers:
- Symantec AntiVirus (Win Mac): protects your computer from viruses and intruders
- UB Virtual Private Network (UBVPN) (Win Mac): enables you to send data safely over the Internet to and from UB
- Adobe Reader (Win Mac): displays pdf files
- Ad-aware and Spybot: removes spyware
