Mozilla Thunderbird Configuration

  1. After installing Thunderbird, start Thunderbird from the Application Menu.
  2. If this is your first time running Thunderbird, the New Account Wizard will start automatically. If not, choose Account Settings from the Edit menu.
  3. Choose Email Account and then click on the Next button.
  4. Enter your Name as you would like it to appear on outgoing email and enter your UB email address, UBITName@buffalo.edu. Click on Next.
  5. Select the IMAP option. Enter imap.buffalo.edu and smtp.buffalo.edu into the Incoming Server and Outgoing Server fields, respectively. Click Next.
  6. Ensure that your UBITName is entered into the User Name field. Click Next.
  7. Enter a descriptive label for the account, such as UB Central Email System. Click Next.
  8. Click Finish to complete email setup. Your INBOX will automatically be opened when you start Mozilla Mail & News.

LDAP Configuration

You can use the University's Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server to search the UB Online Directory for email addresses of students, faculty, staff, and other people affiliated with the University at Buffalo. You can also update your personal record and search the UB Online Directory at http://www.buffalo.edu/directory.

To configure Thunderbird to use the Online Directory, follow these steps:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. On the left sidebar, click on the Composition icon, and click on the checkbox labeled Directory Server, and then click on Edit Directories.
  3. Click on Add.
  4. Enter the following information:
    Name: UB LDAP
    Hostname: ldap.buffalo.edu
    Base DN: o=University at Buffalo,c=US

  5. Continue clicking on OK until you are at the main Thunderbird window. You can now search the UB LDAP directory whenever you compose a new message by clicking on Contacts and choosing the UB LDAP addressbook.

Newsgroup Configuration

  1. After launching Thunderbird, select the Edit menu, and choose Account Settings.
  2. Click on Add Account and select the Newsgroup Account option. Click Next.
  3. Enter your name as you would like it to appear, as well as your UB email address, UBITName@buffalo.edu. Click Next.
  4. Enter news.buffalo.edu into the Newsgroup Server field and click Next.
  5. Enter a descriptive label for the account, such as UB Newsgroup Server, and click Next.
  6. Click Finish to complete newsgroup setup.
  7. To view newsgroups, you must first subscribe to them. Open Thunderbird. In the left hand pane you will see an item with the descriptive label you assigned to the news account in Step 6. Click on this label, and then in the right hand pane click on Manage newsgroup subscriptions. After entering your UBITname and password, you will be able to search for newsgroups and subscribe to them by clicking on Subscribe.
