UBLinux discontinued

UBLinux, the campus distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4)for desktops, is no longer available for new installations.

All central campus support for UBLinux will cease at the end of Spring 2009. We recommend that you migrate to Ubuntu or Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5 (RHEL 5). To migrate, back up your data and install the new Linux distribution.

We recommend installing Ubuntu for new installations of desktop Linux unless you have a specific reason to use a different distribution. We only recommend you install Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5 on your desktop computer if you have a specific reason.

Evaluate compatibility with your hardware and required software applications and consider alternatives on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh before installing any Linux distribution.

Consult with your instructors if you are a student. Faculty or staff should consult with their IT node support.

Current installations of UBLinux will continue to receive updates for packages provided by Red Hat via the Red Hat Network (RHN) for as long as Red Hat provides support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4.

The following custom UBLinux packages will no longer be updated via RHN unless there is a security issue. Downloads of these packages for RHEL 4 will no longer be available after Fall 2008.
