Install Notes for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

If you are installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, then see this document.

During the installation process of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), you will be prompted to register for the Red Hat Network (RHN). RHN allows your system to receive important security and software updates. However, you should NOT sign up for an account with the RHN, as one is already provided for UB students, faculty and staff.

The following steps will illustrate how to skip over the RHN registration when your system first boots RHEL. You will then be able to register using our special instructions at our RHN site.

  1. During the "Firstboot" process of RHEN installation, a screen titled "Red Hat Login" will appear. Choose the "Tell me why I need to register and provide a Red Hat login" option, and click on the "Next" button.

  2. On the next screen, choose the "I cannot complete registration at this time. Remind me later." and click on the "Next" button. The rest of the RHEL configuration process will continue at this point.

  3. To finish configuring your system, you'll need to Register with UB's RHN proxy.
