Using the Red Hat Network on RHEL 4

NOTE: The RHEN Applet icon in the upper-right corner of your screen is not automatically configured for you. To configure the RHEN Applet to display whether your system is updated, please follow the steps below.

  1. Double click on the RHN Notification Applet, which will be located next to the clock and appear as a flashing exclamation point inside of a red circle.
  2. Click on Forward to begin configuration of the applet.
  3. The privacy agreement for using the RHN Applet will now be displayed. Click on Forward to continue.
  4. Most users will not need to use an HTTP Proxy, so do not enter any information here. Click on Forward to continue.
  5. Configuration of the RHN Applet is now complete. Click on the Apply button to finish.
  6. You can now use the RHN Applet to view whether updates are being performed on your system. The automatic updater will run once a day as long as you are connected to the Internet and are on campus or using the VPN Client.

Using up2date

Please Note : You must be either on campus or using the UB VPN client to connect to our proxy server with up2date.

The RHN Applet will show one of two statuses. If you see a flashing excalmation point, it means that there are updates available. A checkmark means that your system is up to date.

Update Status
No Updates Available Updates Available
  1. To retrieve any available updates, double-click on the RHN Applet. Click Launch up2date... on the window which appears.
  2. If you have never used up2date before, you will be prompted to install Red Hat's GPG Key. Click Yes to continue.
  3. The up2date process will now begin. Click on Forward to continue.
  4. Confirm that you are subscribed to the channels which you wish to recieve updates from and click on Forward.
  5. Click Forward and continue clicking on Forward to download and install all applicable updates.

For Advanced Users

If you want to check to see if updates are being performed, you can look at the system logs. The automatic update utility stores its log in /var/log/cronup2date and the update log itself is in /var/log/up2date.
