UB NetPass

40 Seconds Saves 140 Computers

All it takes is one vulnerable computer to expose an entire network to a debilitating virus or worm infection. This semester, UB NetPass, with an average scan time of 40 seconds, found 140 vulnerable computers, protecting more than 7,000 computers in ResNet.

The 140 vulnerable computers were identified and directed to instructions on how to patch the vulnerabilites. Once patched, the computers were allowed to connect to ResNet, safer and more secure.

UB NetPass is a safety inspection program for your computer. It helps you protect your computer from potential Internet threats.

How does it work?

You will not connect immediately to the Internet once you connect your computer to ResNet and bring up a web browser. Instead, we will ask for permission to scan your computer for potential vulnerabilities and virus infections using UB NetPass. If no major problems are detected, your computer will be issued a "pass" to the Internet. Your pass is valid for the entire semester. If problems are detected, UB NetPass will provide instruction on how to correct them yourself and how to rescan until all problems are remedied.

Assistance with the scanning process is available from the CIT Help Desk and UBMicro.

UB NetPass is part of a multi-tiered Internet security program. We strongly encourage you to install Symantec AntiVirus (or Symantec AntiVirus for Mac) and apply critical updates or patches to your computer before you come to school.

PS2 and XBox Connection Problems

Please contact the CIT Help Desk if you're experiencing difficulties connecting your Playstation or Microsoft X-Box to the network.
