IT Safe Computing Checklist

There are a few steps you must do before you plug your computer in to ResNet. We recommend you do these at home, before you come to campus.

Start Safe

  1. Create a user ID and password for your computer. This prevents others from turning on your computer and accessing your files and personal information.
  2. Fortify your passwords. A strong password should be at least 8 characters and should be a mix of letters, numbers and special characters. A short article describing the creation of a strong password can be found at the Microsoft security web site.
  3. Turn off your computers Guest account and assign a password to your computers Administrator account. Until you do, your system is wide open to anyone accessing your computer - including uninvited Internet intruders.
  4. Install the Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) software included with the UB Tech Tools CD. Download the software now if you don't have a Tech Tools CD.
  5. Install a firewall router. UB approved firewall routers are featured in UBMicro's Network accessories page.
  6. Backup important data files to external media (floppy disks, CDs, zip disks, memory sticks, etc.)

Stay Safe!

Once you are connected to the Internet:

  1. Immediately update your Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) definitions.
  2. Immediately install Microsoft Windows service packs and critical updates issued for your operating system. Apple users should install all security software updates available from Apple's website.
  3. Make sure Ad-aware and Spybot are installed and running on your PC.

See our Computer Security site for more information on personal computer security.
