ResNet
About ResNet
ResNet allows you to connect to the UB network and the Internet from within UB residence halls and campus apartments using a wired Ethernet connection Many residence halls also have wireless connections available, in addition to ResNet.
Getting started
- We recommend your computer meet these technical recommendations.
- Follow these steps to ensure your computer is clean and free from vulnerabilities.
Decide if you need a router
Purchase a router if you connect more than one device to ResNet at a time. This includes computers and gaming devices.
If you purchase a wireless router, it must be secured to prevent other residents from accessing the device. See your router manufacturer's guide to determine how to set a password on your router.
Purchase an Ethernet cable
Bring your own Ethernet cable to connect to ResNet.. Each residence hall room or campus apartment comes with one Ethernet port per occupant. Purchasing an Ethernet cable at least 25 feet in length allows you increased flexibility when you configure the furniture in your room.

Register Your Computer, Router or Gaming System
Once you arrive on campus you must register your computer, router, or gaming console before you can connect through ResNet.

- How to register your gaming system if you plug it directly into the wall jack.

I have a problem with the data port in the wall of my room
Contact the CIT Help Desk, 716-645-3542, for help with any problem you have with ResNet, including ports.
I can’t access the Internet
If your computer is infected by a virus or any other type of malware, your Internet access will be temporarily disabled to ensure it does not infect the rest of ResNet and you will receive a notification letter. You must clean and certify your computer before you can re-connect.
I can’t get my XBox to work.
- If you have a router, make sure your cable connects from the wall data port to the router, and your computer and gaming console connect to one of the available ports on the router. You must register your router.
- Alternately, you can connect your gaming console to the Ethernet port and register your gaming console.
