Hi my name is (student’s name). In the preceding two lessons, we showed you all kinds of resources that you access with a few simple clicks on the internet. Now it’s time to look at some of the on-campus resources that you’ll want to take advantage of.
If you head out the door and leave your computer behind, you’ll often find yourself wishing that you had one close by. This isn’t a problem because UB has so many public computing sites that there’s bound to be one right around the corner no matter where you are on campus. A public computing site is a place where any member of the campus community can use a workstation.
On the North Campus, public sites are located in Bell and Fronczak Halls. The computers in these computing sites are available to all UB students and staff who are welcome to log onto any available computer using their UBITname and password. In addition, there are public computer sites in the UB libraries known as Cybraries. These are located in the Capen Library and Lockwood Library. If you live in one of the North Campus residence halls, you’ll find sites in both the Clinton and Red Jacket Halls.
If you’ll be spending a lot of time on UB’s South Campus you’ll find public sites in Diefendorf Hall and the Health Science Library, as well as inside the Clement residence hall, for residential students.
Your comprehensive student fee helps pay for over 550 computers and support in these Cybraries and public sites as well as over 100 computers for research in the Libraries, so make sure you take advantage of this resource when you need it. For more information about the public sites, check out the public sites page at ubit.buffalo.edu/sites/. Just click on a computing site location to get up-to-date comprehensive information about that particular site such as what hardware, software and specific services are available there.
In addition to giving you access to computers and the internet, public sites offer you plenty of places for you to print your work. iprint@ub is UB’s new printing service that provides 1500 printed sheets per year at no additional cost to you. And if you need to exceed your page allocation, you can purchase more with Campus Cash using your UB card, or with print/copy cards available at print locations.
Another on-campus resource that you’ve heard about already is UBMicro, UB’s non-profit computer store. UBMicro is a one-stop hub for computer products, services and information for UB students and staff at reasonable prices. All UBMicro products meet the UBIT standards, and as an authorized higher education reseller, UBMicro can sell many computer products at educational discounts. UBMicro is located in the Commons on the North Campus so make it a point to stop in and browse their wide array of computers, business utilities, scientific software, educational software, and accessories. Get to know the UBMicro staff who stay on top of technology updates and changes so that you have one less thing that you need to worry about.
You’ll find that the public computer sites and UBMicro are invaluable to your work here at UB, so take some time to walk around the campuses and get familiar with these resources.
Thanks for watching!
