Lesson 3: UB ID Basics

2. Read the Summary

The most important information a student needs to access all of UB’s online resources is their UBITName and password. Students do not have the option to change the UBITName that has been assigned to them, but they must change their password to ensure security and privacy. There can be up to a one-hour delay for any change to take effect for some applications, so the best time to change your password is when you will not be logging into UB’s resources again for at least one hour.

All students will use their individual UBITName followed by the “@buffalo.edu” extension as their email address, “UBITName@buffalo.edu”. Currently, new users need to activate their UBIT mailbox from the UBIT website. At this site, students will also find directions on how to add filters or how to forward email to another UB departmental address. It is important for all students to use their UBIT email for all communication with UB departments, professors and students. Many UB faculty and staff use the “buffalo.edu” extension of an address to identify student email. Without this extension, there is good possibility that email could be overlooked. Also, any official UB communication from faculty, advisors or the registration office will be delivered to student UB email addresses. If students are not using this address, a great amount of important information will be missed.
