Get Started at UB
This information applies to new UB students. You are a new student when you confirm your intent to attend UB and make a tuition payment.
To secure your UBITName so that you can use it to access computer-related services at UB, you must have the following credentials:
- Your UBITName
- Your person number
- A single-use password
You receive these credentials in different ways depending on your status:
- International student: from the International Student and Scholars Services during International Student Orientation after you arrive at UB
- Undergraduate, non-International student: from Admissions after applying to UB
- Graduate, non-International student: from your department after being accepted
- Non-matriculated student: From the CIT Help Desk, 214 Lockwood, Lockwood 2nd Floor Cybrary. Fax (716-645-3617) or email a scan of government issued photo ID along with a request for your account claim credentials.
Before you arrive at UB:
Claim your UBITName and set your password
- Undergraduate Non-International Students
- You claimed your UBITName after you applied to UB and used it to track your application.
- Look up your UBITName if you can't remember it.
- Go to the UBITName Management Tool and click Forgot your password to reset your password if you can't remember it.
- Graduate Students, International Students and Non-matriculated students
- Find your UBITName.
Your UBITName is your key to IT services at UB. Look up your UBITName. - Set your password and claim your UBITName to make it ready for use.
Before you can change your password, you must first claim your account. - Go to http://ubit.buffalo.edu/ubitname/ and click Claim my account.
- Enter the following where indicated:
- UBITName
- single-use password
- last four digits of your person number
- month of birth
- Create a new password.
A secure password protects your personal information. Answer secret questions so you can reset your password if you forget it.
Prepare your computer
- Make sure you have the right computer
- We expect you to have a personal computer. Read our recommended standards so we can best support you.
- Run operating system updates
- Use your operating system’s built-in firewall and update features to ensure the security of your computer. Run Windows Update (Windows) or Software Update (Mac).
- Install software
- For security, install antivirus software (Windows) (Mac) provided by UB. Antivirus software protects your computer by automatically removing viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.
- Download and install Microsoft Office (Windows) (Mac) and other software from UB.
- Be aware of UB's policy about connecting your computer to the university network
- You must keep your computer's operating system patched and up to date and keep your anti-virus software up to date.

Learn about email at UB
- Your email address is: Your UBITName@buffalo.edu
- Use your UBITName and password to verify your identity (authenticate) to read, send, and manage your UB email.
- Log in to your UB email.
After you arrive at UB:
Connect to UB's Network and the Internet
- Using wireless anywhere on campus
- Configure UB_Secure to connect to wireless on campus.
- In your Residence Hall or Campus Apartment
- Use ResNet to connect from wired connections in Residence Halls and Campus Apartments.
- Use UB_Secure to connect your wireless device to the network.
- From off campus
Learn how to print at UB
- Print to your own printer
- We recommend you have a personal printer.
- Print to a public printer
- Use a public computer or install iprint anywhere and print from your personal computer.
- Each time you print using a public printer, the cost is deducted from your iprint quota.
