A Quick Guide to UB Computing for UBThisSummer Students
Your UB Account
Your UBITName is your computer account at UB. It is your passport to UB email, MyUB, UBLearns, library databases, and a host of other online services.
Your UBITName is automatically created when you register for classes after completing your Summer Sessions Undergraduate Data Form or the Graduate Online Application found on your graduate department website.
You can find your UBITName online or on a UBITName Lookup Station at a Computing and Information Technology (CIT) Public Computing site. Swipe your UBCard, and your UBITName, email address and the default password formula will be displayed on the screen.
Your password
If this is your first time enrolling at UB and using your UBITName, your UBITName password should be your four (4) digit birthday (mmdd) followed by the last six (6) digits of your UBCard number (under your picture). For instance, if your birthday is June 16th and the last six digits of your UBCard are 123456, then your password should be 0616123456.
Securing your password is very important; confidential and sensitive information is protected by your password. You can change your password online.
If you have forgotten your password or your password does not work, we can reset it at the CIT Help Desk.
You may come to the CIT Help Desk (214 Lockwood, Lockwood 2nd Floor Cybrary, North Campus) any time during regular business hours. You will need to bring your UBCard so we can verify your identity. You can also fax a copy of your UBCard or driver's license, telephone number, and a brief note explaining that you need your password reset to (716) 645-3617. CIT Help Desk staff will contact you when your password has been reset.
Your official UB email address is UBITName@buffalo.edu. As a UBThis Summer student, you should periodically check your official University email account. You must activate your UBIT mailbox before using it; you may want to turn on junk mail filtering at the same time to cut down on potential spam.
MyUB and UBLearns
MyUB is a web-based, personal portal, a "one-stop" website to access all information about UB that you will need most while you are here during the summer. We urge you to become a regular MyUB visitor! UBLearns is our online course management service; many professors use UBLearns as an integral part of the classroom experience. Both MyUB and UBLearns require that you know and use your UBITName and password.
Libraries
Your UBITName and UBCard are most helpful in accessing many library services - especially since many are available online. You can access them from your home, office, or your favorite internet cafe!
Software
As a UB student you are entitled to popular academic software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe's Creative Suite and UB Tech Tools at little or no cost.
UB Tech Tools is a suite of software available to help you get safely connected at UB. You should install the Tech Tools antivirus and VPN software on your computer before going online. After the software is installed, you can safely download updates and additional products from the UBIT software site.
In addition, huge discounts on popular computers and other software products are available from UBMicro IT Support Services in the Commons on the North Campus.
And more
This list is just the tip of the iceberg; a more comprehensive list of services is available online.
