Alert Notification via E-mail

You may subscribe to any of the CIT listserv notification lists to receive e-mail notification of CIT alerts. These lists are set up to announce events having varying impacts on the general computing resources and services provided by CIT.

List Descriptions

• Campus-Wide CIT Alerts (cit-alert)
  Announcements pertaining to events having a campus-wide impact on computing resources and services are distributed to members of this list. Typical areas covered include: UNIX timesharing systems, e-mail, ppp, dial-ins, and the campus-wide network.
• Network Related Announcements (netops-l)
  Announcements pertaining to events having a more localized impact on network related resources are distributed to members of this list. Typical areas covered include: localized network outages related to a specific building or hub, and localized power outages.
• Centrally Scheduled Technology Classroom Announcements (tcstatus-list)
  Announcements pertaining to events relating to centrally scheduled technology classrooms are distributed to members of this list. Typical areas covered include: upgrades to classroom equipment, unavailability of rooms, and the current status of classrooms experiencing problems (e.g. Bldg A, RM 555: PC NOT functioning).

Subscribing To The Lists

To subscribe to any of the above lists perform the following steps:

1. Send an e-mail message to: listserv@listserv.buffalo.edu
2. Leave the "Subject:" line blank.
3. Inside the mail message, put the following text as the only line:

   SUB list_name John Doe

   Replace "list_name" with one of the lists mentioned above (cit-alert, UB_LANOS, netops-l, tcstatus-list) and replace "John Doe" with your name.
4. These lists require the list administrator's approval of subscription requests. You will typically receive confirmation of your subscription request within 24-72 hours.
5. You must send the above message for each list you wish to subscribe to.

Please note: The tcstatus-list currently does not require the list administrator's approval for subscription requests. Instead, you will receive instructions regarding how to confirm your subscription. These instructions may arrive within a few minutes or not until several hours have passed.

IMPORTANT: After you have received the confirmation instructions, you must send a confirmation message within 48 hours. If you fail to do this, then you must start over with a new SUB command message.

Unsubscribing From The Lists

To unsubscribe from any of the above lists do the following:

1. Send an e-mail message to: listserv@listserv.buffalo.edu
2. Leave the "Subject:" line blank.
3. Inside the mail message, put the following text as the only line:
   

   SIGNOFF list_name

   Replace "list_name" with the name of the list you're unsubscribing from.
4. You will receive confirmation of your removal - this may take minutes or it may take hours depending on the listserv load.
5. You must send the above message for each list you wish to unsubscribe from.
